Soil and vine
This wine is a blend from two vineyards located in Luján de Cuyo, with outstanding health and phytosanitary conditions. The soils are sandy-loam, with stones from varying size, poor organic matter and very good drainage.
The three varieties are vinified separately exactly the same way. The grapes are hand-picked in boxes from 18 to 20 kilograms, bunches are selected and then pressed with the whole cluster, except from Riesling, that is de-stalked and macerated in press for 8 hours at 10 °C. Before the fermentation process, a cold budbreak is conducted for 36 hours. After that, Viognier and Rieslings musts are fermented using selected yeasts in stainless steel tanks at temperatures that range from 14 °C to 16 °C. Chardonnays must is fermented in new oak barrels, where it is aged for six months. The other two varieties are kept in stainless steel tanks in contact with fine lees. Once the ageing is finished, the final blend is done and then wine is stabilized, filtered and bottled. Before its launch into the market, it is stowed in cold storage (at 7 °C) for at least six months.
Ageing in barrels
The Chardonnay is aged in new oak barrels for six months.
Comments by the winemaker
With Gala 3 we seek to emphasize the quality and complexity obtained with blends of white varieties, thus showing the potential of the terroirs of Mendoza for cultivation. The Viognier provides character and structure, while the Chardonnay gives citric, floral notes and sweetness and the Riesling, on the other hand, adds complexity, freshness and minerality. Due to its cold weather, the 2016 harvest was very favorable to preserve acidity in white grapes. The work at the vineyard was essential to achieve the proper health and obtain the grapes optimum ripeness. The result was a highly intense, fresh wine with aromatic precision and a fatty balance in the mouth.
